Each year, millions of people flock to their television screens to see which Hollywood stars and musical artists will take home an Academy Award or Grammy for best performances and contributions to their craft. At BOMA/Chicago, we throw our own celebration at the start of each year – the TOBY/Gold Circle Awards Gala – recognizing our industry’s best of the best.
Similar to the Hollywood Foreign Press and members of the Recording Academy, our judges evaluate building and professional excellence on a wide-range of criteria during comprehensive application processes that include interviews, on-site visits, tenant testimonials and professional recommendations.
This year’s TOBY Award finalists competed in five categories. They were judged on tenant relations initiatives, commitment to environmental sustainability, emergency preparedness, budgeting, work order systems, security standards, staff experience and continuing education opportunities. Gold Circle Awards finalists were judged on their professional accomplishments, involvement in the industry, professionalism and positive impact on Chicago’s commercial real estate community.
Over 520 of you – a record-breaking attendance – joined us in the beautiful Great Hall of Chicago’s Union Station on January 30 for a night full of networking, elegant dining and to recognize our finalists. Janet Davies returned as the emcee and kept everyone’s attention as she enthusiastically announced the winners of Chicago’s world-class properties and the dedicated people who manage those properties. Make sure to visit the Gala photo album to re-live the night’s festivities.
We would once again like to recognize all of the TOBY and Gold Circle Award finalists and congratulate this year’s winners. Winners are marked with an asterisk and you can also click here to view the full profiles of the winners.

BOMA/Chicago would like to thank each of the TOBY/Gold Circle Awards Gala sponsors (see logos to the right). Their generous support contributed a great deal to the success and festivities of the night. Sponsors were recognized during the presentation, but you couldn’t miss seeing their logos as they rotated on two giant cubes hanging over the Great Hall. It was quite a sight to see!
BOMA/Chicago relies on Affiliate Member sponsorships to help drive revenues that keep events on budget and we are very thankful for all of our generous contributors. We are also thrilled that feedback has shown that our event sponsorships also give Affiliates the ability to increase their prominence, visibility and accessibility to key decision makers in the commercial real estate industry. If you missed the opportunity to sponsor the Gala, there are many other events and avenues to gain brand awareness among your target audience in 2014. Click here for more information.

- Kelly Davies, RPA

BOMA/Chicago will be offering four RPA/FMA courses in 2014, so make sure to check out this year’s education calendar. Many of you may not know that RPA and FMA designees earn over 20% more than those with similar experience but who do not have a designation. If you are considering earning a designation as the next step in furthering your career, but you are concerned about affordability, you can apply for three scholarships throughout the year:
- Ollie Scholarship (Applications due by February 14, 2014)
- Single Designation Course Scholarship
- Full Designation Scholarship
Joe Sherman, Operations Coordinator at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, was recognized as the winner of the 2013-14 Full Designation Scholarship at the Gala. Joe has worked at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 2007 and is eager to complete the required RPA courses as quickly as possible.
Many of our members dedicate their time to making each TOBY/Gold Circle Awards Gala a success. Each TOBY, Gold Circle Award and scholarship application is thoroughly reviewed by BOMA/Chicago Committees and judges. The BOMA/Chicago Social Marketing Committee also helps us each year in planning this event. Click here to see a full list of our TOBY and Gold Circle Award judges and those on the Scholarship and Social Marketing Committees.
BOMA/Chicago congratulates each of this year’s winners and gives a big thank you to each member who attended the Gala. Don’t forget to give us your TOBY/Gold Circle Awards feedback by February 14 – complete the survey here. You can also give us feedback by leaving a comment below. See you at the next event!
